Chinese Noodle House (SYD)

9.5 out of 10

They’ve lost half a point because they only take cash and who the hell carries cash on them these days.

When I moved to Sydney (the second time) I only really had two friends. One night they were both going to their friend’s birthday dinner, and I got a pity invite. Initially I didn’t want to go and crash some random’s birthday and also have to make polite small talk with a group of strangers. But thank God I went. Because I was introduced to Chinese Noodle House. And I have not looked back since that day.

Ended up that I couldn’t even really talk to anyone because I was so busy stuffing my face with noodles and wondering who was going to get the last dumpling on the shared plate.

What really tipped me over the line to go was that they do BYO. Hot tip, there are bottleos around in case you get there and forget.

Second hot tip, there is also an ATM around the corner if you get to the restaurant and forget cash.

Third hot tip, you have to ask for a fork because they only give you chopsticks. And really, rightfully so. You must go through the shame of having to ask and boy do you feel it. But sometimes my chopstick skills just aren’t up to the task and I’m wearing a white shirt!! Splatter city!

I’m a creature of habit so I don’t really go to many new food places. When people come visit me in Sydney and say “where should we eat? You must know some good restaurants” I reply, “I only know one. Get some cash out and let’s go”.

The last two years, my birthday has been spent at Chinese Noodle House. Not the whole day obviously, that would be insane. Just lunch. I would have gone in 2020 as well but I spent my birthday cleaning out my apartment to move back in with my parents… just pandemic things.

Another great thing, this place is crazy cheap. Once I went with a group of 6 and we got so much food we took home 3 containers of leftovers. The bill came to $120. FOR SIX PEOPLE + LEFTOVERS FOR DAYS! INSANE!

Here are my menu recommendations:

  • Pork and chive dumps (pan fried obviously)
  • Chicken and cabbage dumps (pan fried obviously)
  • Fried knife sliced noodles (preferably with beef)
  • Knife sliced noodle in pork mince sauce
  • Shallot pancake

DON’T BE FOOLED BY ANY OF THE OTHER SIMILARLY NAMED RESTAURANTS IN THE VACINITY!!! THE ONE YOU WANT IS CALLED ‘CHINESE NOODLE HOUSE’ AND IT IS AMAZING.
